Looking to sell this year? Start preparing now

Selling your home is quite an undertaking. If you are looking ahead to the new year and making plans to sell your home, it’s best to start prepping now. From a fresh coat of paint to a few trips to drop off items you no longer need, when you space out the projects over a few months it’ll be much more manageable.

Here are 5 things you should start doing if you’re looking to sell your home next year:

Create a To-Do List
It’s hard to know when you’re done if you don’t know what you need to do. Walk around your house and make a list of any projects that may need to happen. Nothing is too small to add to the list, you can always remove it later. Check that your doorknobs work, windows seal and the paint is in good condition. If you think it could be fixed, add it to the list to update over the next few months.

Start Completing Projects
Now that you have a to-do list you can start working through it. Start with larger projects and move through to the smaller projects that can be done quickly. When you’re working with electric and plumbing always hire a professional because you never know what can happen. Most cosmetic projects can be completed by you as long as you feel comfortable with the scope.

Start Decluttering
Make moving easier and start the staging process for your house by decluttering around your home. Houses show better when there is less clutter on the shelves and in the closets. Getting rid of things around your home you don’t need will also make your future move easier. Since you have time, declutter room by room so it’s not overwhelming.

Freshen Up
New paint can go a long way when it comes to selling your home. If it’s been over 5 years since you painted, it’s time for a quick coat before you put your home on the market. You also need to paint over any bold colors before your home goes on the market. You want buyers to easily be able to envision their lives in your home and it’s easier for them to do that when the walls are neutral.
